Digital Strategy — Aligning Value Realisation with Organisational Capability

A bold digital vision is meaningless without the capability to bring it to life.

That’s where Digital Strategy comes in—the first of the six Core Capabilities in the Digital Maturity Index (DMI) framework. It represents your organisation’s ability to develop, align, and realise a coherent digital direction across the business.

But strategy isn’t just about planning. It’s about execution. And that requires capability alignment—ensuring your people, processes, technologies, and leadership are all equipped to deliver the value your strategy promises.

Within the DMI, Digital Strategy is the driver of Value Realisation—connecting intention with tangible outcomes. When it’s mature, it links market opportunity with operational action. When it’s underdeveloped, transformation stalls before it even begins.

The uncomfortable truth is this: many digital initiatives fail because they outpace the organisation’s real readiness. Strategy overreaches, and capability underdelivers.

This is why we assess Digital Strategy as a specific capability—not as a generic plan, but as a lived, enacted force within the organisation. And we break it down further into key Building Block Capabilities (Constructs), such as:

  • Strategy Leadership & Alignment
  • Value Proposition Innovation
  • Resource Allocation & Prioritisation
  • Business Model Evolution
  • Performance Metrics & Monitoring
  • Strategic Risk Management

Each of these Constructs reveals a deeper layer of how your strategy is (or isn’t) set up for success. We’ll explore these in the coming weeks.

For now, ask yourself: Is our digital strategy matched by our organisational maturity to execute it?

Because…

An organisation cannot operate at a level higher than its current capability.
