I’m so glad this article arrived early in 2020. It’s exactly right. Organisations, including large organisations, are adopting “models” – be they Spotify, ING, or others – as though they are “one-size-fits-all.” They are not. And, as Zappos discovered when they implemented the Holacracy model, many of these models completely ignore the “people” aspects of the change.
We should learn about the different models, not so that we can copy them, but so that we can adapt them to best suit our own organisation. Pick and choose from the different models – generate ideas that are innovative and fit your own organisation.
There is, however, a map for success. It starts with creating the culture and mindset, including a learning culture and psychological safety. Without that, no matter what the structure is, you will have problems.
