What will the workplace of the future look like? The true answer is – no one really knows. What does seem to be clear, based on surveys and insights from various organisations, is that the new normal won’t be like the old one.
Remote Working is here to stay. Research shows us that:
- Many people have become accustomed to working from home, and want to keep it that way
- People working from home are more productive
- The organisation saves money by having a “work-from-home” workforce.
Yes, people have suffered burnout during “lockdown”, but this was because no one was prepared for it. People working from home were not prepared – they didn’t have the tools, and they had many other distractions to deal with. And, management were not prepared – “traditional” styles of management are just not suited to managing a remote workforce.
Methods, tools and processes have, by now, been cobbled together to make it work – for now. But, this will also change as we go forward.
Traditional concepts of work that can be done in-office at specific times will be abandoned. Replaced by work that can be accomplished remotely at any time. Teams and individuals will be empowered and enabled to achieve success in all facets of their work from all potential access points. Better tools will become available, styles of management will change, processes will continue to change and people will adapt and change.
But, this is not going to happen overnight. As our world changes, new technologies will appear that are going to make this easier. And, we have to become more adaptable to enable these changes to take place
Experimentation and agility will be key for determining what’s really going to work as we go forward.
And, there will be almost constant change in how we manage a remote workforce as we learn what works, what doesn’t, and what to do to make it work even better.
What you need going forward is a group of people with experience and no-how in all aspects of “remote working”, as well as technology and the “people” aspects of working remotely.
